Talking Rocks Cavern in Branson, MO Offers a Full Day of Fun
My youngest two children had never been inside a cave before. We decided there was not a better time than now to introduce them to their very first cave experience. While in Branson, Missouri, we took them to Talking Rocks Cavern. The cave experience was just one of the many things they were able to experience while at Talking Rocks Cavern.
Free Things to Do Before Touring the Cave
Aside from touring the cave, we had plenty to do while killing time prior to our tour time (and after the tour ended). Tours depart frequently throughout the day. You can enjoy the free nature trail and playground before or after your tour. My kids may have loved the Speleo Boxes just as much if not more than the cave tour itself (and they loved the cave tour if that says anything about these boxes). Anyone under 6 ft 2 inches and 220 pounds can climb all through the Speleo Boxes. Speleo Boxes are made of wood but give you the feeling like you are spelunking in a cave (inside really tight quarters). I have been spelunking inside a natural cave once before. The tight spots inside the Speleo boxes really are similar to that of a cave (except that in the boxes, you can see out. In a cave, it is pitch black). Inside the gift shop, they have another Speleo Box that is much darker considering it is behind the wall of the gift shop! It isn't every day that you can crawl through the walls of a gift shop! My kids thought that was pretty awesome! It gives mom and dad a chance to look around the gift shop while the children play! There are THREE faces (and one phone) hiding inside this Speleo Box below... can you find ALL three?
The Cave Tour
Before entering the cave, you will meet your tour guide who will present a little bit of history about the cave itself. He or she will also give you the rules they have set to make sure everyone stays safe and the cave is preserved to the best of their ability. To me, thinking about how the caves were found and the bravery it took to enter the unknown is really a pretty neat story. You can find a little more of the history of Talking Rocks Cavern by going to their "About" page on their website. Once inside the cave, you will walk steps deep down inside the cave. Handrails and electricity throughout the cave make it feasible for even the less adventurous ones in the group. The tours last approximately one hour. Like I said earlier, the bravery the men had who first went inside the cave must have been great. When I think of caves, I think of bears and other wild animals hanging out deep inside them. Exploring THIS cave was no different, bear prints still exist on the walls of the Talking Rocks Cavern! Animals do not live inside this particular cave anymore since the enterance to the cave is now inside the gift shop. Check out the bear prints in the photo below! I loved how just about anywhere inside the cave became a unique photo opportunity! I kept thinking that I had found the BEST spot to take a photo and then would see another amazing "backdrop" around the next turn! It was absolutely beautiful inside! I am sure you can tell just from these photos but I must say these photos do not do the cave justice. The details of the cave are stunning!
If the cave tour, speleo boxes, gift shop, nature walk, and playground are not enough to keep you occupied, Talking Rocks Cavern also has a mini golf course! The mini-golf course is in a nice shaded area allowing great entertainment even on hot days! You will learn interesting facts about the nature of caves, streams, and other things all throughout the 9 hole golf course.
