Full Disclosure: In exchange for my honest review, my family received free admission to the Talking Rocks Cavern. Plus you get a discount as my fans. As always, my opinions are my own.
Missouri is known for its geologic features and Talking Rocks Caverns is a must-see sight. Being from Ohio, I expected the caverns to be similar to the Ohio Caverns in southwest Ohio. I was wrong. These caverns were much more extensive and went much deeper into the ground.
Before going into the caverns, our tour guide, Steph, explained a little bit of the history of the caverns. She then warned that if we dropped anything it would fall 100 feet down. I didn’t really know what 100 feet down would look like until we entered the cavern. Being afraid of heights, this took my breath away. Steph clearly explained everything we would encounter so that anyone not up for the journey could turn back before beginning.
The cavern had cement steps installed with very sturdy handrails. The steps were wet since that couldn’t be avoided. David did a great job of walking down all of the steps by himself. He was thrilled by the experience.
William, on the other hand, made me pretty nervous. At just under 2 years old and still likely to arch his back and throw a tantrum I realized that he was still a little too young for the experience—especially because the heights made me a little sweaty and shaky. My husband gladly took all of the pictures on the tour since I refused to unclench my grip on Willie.
The tour really was beautiful. Throughout the tour, Steph stopped to talk about the formations, how they were created and wildlife in the cavern. She was friendly, knowledgeable and funny. She was great when David would ask questions.
Outside of the caverns, there were also other activities for the kids. A playground let them stretch their legs. There was also mini golf for families to enjoy. The boys were thrilled with the gift shop and the many pieces of rocks and minerals they could look at there.
